Plunkett, Macrae and Courtis highlight massive weekend for Stingray
In a mad flurry of a weekend, Stingray swimmers brought home hardware and took down records across the globe, starting with Chris Courtis. Courtis, swimming in the OUA Provincial Championship Meet in Canada, tied the CIASA and Stingray record in the 50 backstroke, clocking a time of 26.17, giving him 5th place overall. He now shares the record with Brett Fraser, one of Cayman's Olympic Swimming heroes. Courtis will shave and taper for the Canadian Collegiate Swimming Championship in two weeks with the hope of breaking Brett's record outright.
In Jamaica, four Stingray swimmers crashed the party at the Karl Dalhouse Memorial Meet, landing low times and high finishes. Iain Macrae added two events to his CARIFTA program in the 200 breaststroke (3:16.38) and the 100 breaststroke (1:30.49). Macrae's time in the 100 broke the 11-12 boys LCM National record in the event by just under 2 tenths of a second. Not to be outdone, Ella Plunkett raced to lifetime bests in all but one race, and snagged her first two CARIFTA times in the process in the 100 backstroke (1:13.08) and the 200 backstroke (2:36.66). Alex Dakers also joined in the fun, clocking 6 lifetime bests in 6 swims. Dakers qualified for the Scottish Age Group Nationals this summer in the 200 butterfly (2:46.90) as well as reaching a consideration time in the 200 breaststroke (3:03.5). Sam Bailey also lowered her lifetime bests in the 100 free, 50 free and 100 breaststroke.
Here on island, the first installment of the CBAC Sea Swim Series was once again dominated by Stingray folks! Still waiting to get my hands on official results, but do know that in the lollipop 200m swim, Kendra Harrison had her best finish ever, coming in 2nd place! In the 400m swim, Stingray's older boys swept the podium with Cole Morgan, Andrew Smilley and Brandon Williams finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively!
Way to go this weekend swimmers. Happy coach and proud team!
