Stingray's distance crew for the Caledonian hit the water tonight for the first race of the competition, the 800 Freestyle. Sam Bailey and Jonathan Key held together kneck and kneck over the entire race and finished 3rd and 4th overall, respectively. Sam dropped 10 seconds in a time of 10:21 while Jonathan knocked off 11 seconds, finishing at 10:23. Ella Plunkett came in close behind with a time of 10:38, smashing her previous best by 38 seconds. For the second year running, Stingray Swim Club was the only team on island to bring home honors from the weekend of the 21st Annual Flowers Sea Swim. Alex McCallum, competing in the innaugural 5k event this past Monday, finished 5th overall, and 3rd place in the men's division. Food, fun and family filled the dining hall of The Reef Resort on Cayman's East End this past Sunday as SSC held it's Annual Awards Banquet. More than 150 people crowded in to celebrate, including the Honorable Minister Bodden, newly appointed to the head of Sports for Cayman. Every child was recognized for their acheivements and for their efforts over the past year, but a few swimmers were given special recognition for their oustanding accomplishments, which highlighted an exceptional and successful year for the club. Chris Courtis sets off today to Clearwater Florida to compete in the "Beat the Heat Invitational" (I can only assume they are Spurs fans). Courtis will be swimming in 6 events over the course of three days in an attempt to qualify for World Championships this summer in Barcelona as a member of the Barbados team. Good luck Chris! As the fog cleared in Sarasota Saturday morning, Stingray's older swimmers hit the pool to start off a long day of competition on the Gulf Coast. Wunyae Crawford got things started right for the older boys by chopping off 4 seconds in the 200 IM. Crawford also dropped half a second in the 50 freestyle as well. On a warm, light summer night at the Sarasota YMCA Pool, Andrew Smilley and Cole Morgan stepped up and swam the 400 IM, the first event of the night and the first event for a Stingray swimmer. Smilley finished the event in a time of 5:39.55, just off his previous best. Stingray Swim Club is sending 14 swimmers Stateside this Friday morning for the annual Sarasota YMCA Invitational. The competition will be held over three days and will include every recognized Olympic event. Swimmers, young and old, will be making the trip in hopes of PB's, records, podiums, and qualifying times.
